Dr. Maria Wise has been appointed as Interim President, effective Jan. 30, 2020, while Dr. Gonzales fills the Interim Chancellor role. She is suspending her recent retirement to carry out the duties of this position.
Dr. Wise formerly served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Vice President of Student Affairs at GateWay Community College during the last five years.
She initially started her career at Westwood High School as a math teacher and then moved to Central Arizona College as Math Faculty and Division Chair. She also held leadership positions at Chandler-Gilbert Community College prior to coming to GateWay.
Led by Dr. Steven Gonzales, Interim Chancellor of the Maricopa Community College District, GateWay Community College is a community college in Phoenix, Arizona serving approximately 16,000 students. Established in 1968 as the first technical college in Arizona, today GateWay is one of ten regionally accredited colleges in the Maricopa County Community College District. GateWay Community College is the district’s leader in offering skill development offerings to Phoenix metropolitan residents. GateWay has blazed the trail with many firsts including first to use community advisory committees; first to tailor courses to the needs of business and industry; first to offer classes at off-campus locations; and the first to install a computer. Dr. Gonzales is the incoming chair of the Unmudl Community College Steering Council.
